"Cognitive Behavioral Drama as a Foundational Process for Transforming a Neutral Stimulus into a Dependent Reinforcer"
Authors: Sofia Tellidou, Lillian Piliou, Haris Karnezi
Among the various therapeutic interventions that use the principle of reinforcement to effectively address the challenges faced by children with autism is Cognitive Behavioral Drama (CBD). This is a psycho-educational model that uses the dramatic process as a reinforcer, creating interactive scenarios initially based on the participants’ interests and abilities and gradually shaping target behaviors.
The aim of this study was to investigate whether Cognitive Behavioral Drama can change the value of a stimulus from neutral to a dependent reinforcer. The method used was an A-B-A reversal experimental design. During the baseline phase (A)—before the intervention—children were given the opportunity to choose from a range of stimuli (chocolates, candies, chips, puffed snacks, napkins, straws) and, as expected, they selected the food items. In the manipulation phase (B), the dramatic process began, and children then chose stimuli that had no reinforcing value in the previous phase (e.g., napkins, straws). In the final phase (A’), after the dramatic process was withdrawn, behavior returned to the original level, and children again chose the food items.
The results of the study open a window into the possibility of creating accessible, low-cost reinforcers that can be used in therapeutic interventions, thus addressing the common phenomenon of satiation.
