"Cognitive Behavioral Drama, as a fundamental process for transforming a neutral stimulus into a conditioned reinforcer."
Tellidou Sofia, Peliou Lillian, Karnezi Harris
Among the various therapeutic interventions that use the principle of reinforcement to effectively address the difficulties faced by children with autism, there is Cognitive Behavioral Drama (CBD). This is a psychopedagogical model that uses the dramatic process as a reinforcer, creating interactive scenarios, initially based on the interests and capabilities of the participants and progressively leading to targeted behaviors. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether cognitive behavioral drama can change the value of a stimulus, from a neutral to a conditioned reinforcer. The method used is the experimental reversal design ABA. The children in the baseline phase (A) -before the intervention- had the opportunity to choose from a series of stimuli (chocolates, candies, potato chips, shrimp, napkins, straws) and as expected they chose the foods. In the manipulation phase (B), the dramatic procedure began, and then the children chose the stimuli that in the previous phase had no reinforcing power (e.g., napkins, straws). In the final phase (A'), after the dramatic procedure was withdrawn, a return of behavior to the initial level was observed and the children chose the food again. The results of the research open a window into the possibility of creating accessible and low-cost reinforcers, which can be used in therapeutic interventions, thus resolving the frequent phenomenon of satiety.
